The journey from wannapreneur to entrepreneur can be a rocky road. The ones who make the shift from wanting to be in business to really being a successful entrepreneur a) really want it and b) are willing to do the work to get there.

Get to Work
Once you’ve established your idea, get to work! Put your plan in writing. Set your intention by documenting what you intend to do. By planning and documenting what you want to create, you get clear and better communicate the value of your new business. Figure out the logistics of what you are selling or service that you are providing. Research your market. Perfect your brand. Work on the packaging of your product. Test your service or product on others.
Note: As you build out your business, don’t be afraid to get experience on the side before you make the full leap, even it is pro bono for a non-profit. Some experts say you have to let go of the ledge and while I agree, don’t do it until you are ready. I waited almost a year before I left the confines of corporate hell in 2005 to start my web marketing company. I worked for clients nights and weekends to make sure I had what it took to succeed.
Carve out time each day to dedicate to making your idea come to life.
Get Out and Network
Make personal connections. You cannot hide behind your computer all day. This is especially crucial if you are planning to sell a service. There are so many networking groups you can tap into. Networking can even happen with friends, relatives, friends of friends, or anyone you strike up a conversation with. If your service or product could help someone, don’t be afraid to let them know. Even if they don’t need you at this moment you never know when they may need you (or your product) or have a friend whom they may refer to you.
Fake it Til You Make It
There is no perfect time to launch your business. Whenever you start, PLEASE don’t say you are “just getting started” – nobody wants to pay to be your test project. Be clear on who you are, what you do, whom you serve and the value of what you do. Kinks can always be ironed out. Many people hesitate to launch their business because they are worried their website isn’t perfect or they haven’t had enough clients. You wanna see what my first website looked like? Click here. I know…right???! (or shall I say, wrong? ha!) But it was all I had and until I made money, it had to do. I didn’t apologize for it.
One of my favorite sayings in business is “shift happens”. Becoming a true entrepreneur means that you are always in the driver’s seat and, as the business or market changes, so do you. Flexibility is the key to creating, and maintaining, a successful business.
Stop talking about your dream and take the first steps to becoming a web-based business entrepreneur. It may be the scariest thing you do, but the day I realized how scary it would be if I didn’t, I was off and running (and that was over 10 years ago!).
