We loved interviewing Wild Web Woman Maggie Berghoff! Maggie leads men and women to their ultimate life of happiness and bliss by taking them through a step-by-step natural health program to rebalance and reboot their body. She’s a functional medicine nurse practitioner who left corporate life to pursue her passion in natural health consulting…and the lifestyle of her dreams!
Meet Maggie Berghoff!
How has your previous employment experience aided you professionally? I’m a Family Nurse Practitioner trained in functional medicine, so the experience I gained through working in the medical field gives me the confidence and knowledge I need to truly lead clients to optimal health and vitality as their natural health consultant.
Do you weave your values into your business? Absolutely! I value family first – above all. What that looks like is allowing myself morning snuggles and feeds with my baby, grocery shopping and making nourishing meals for my husband, and wrapping up my workday at home around 4:00 pm so I can have dinner ready/house cleaned for quality family time in the evening! My business is my passion, but my family is my “Why,” and it’s important to me to be fully present for my family and create a great balance as a mompreneur. I enjoy the traditional mom and wife role, too!
Honesty is another of my top values. Everything I do in my business is based on exactly what I believe will help my client in the greatest way possible, even if that means I don’t make a dime. My #1 goal in business is to allow my clients to live to their fullest potential, to feel and look their best, and to never again have to worry about health symptoms dragging them down. I’m not going to sell them some program or supplement I haven’t first tested tried and true myself. If I ever don’t know an answer, I’m not afraid to say, “You know what, I’m not sure… Let me speak with some colleagues and I will find that out for you.”
What is the best part about being a web-based businesswoman? There are two! I knew I wanted to be web-based because family is my top priority. Being web-based allows me to design my day, be home with my child (and future babies to come!), and be fully present for my husband. I can be present for “mommy duties” while still pursuing my personal passion in natural health consulting. It’s the perfect combination. It’s important to know that just because you want to be a businesswoman, does not mean you are any less of a mom! When I honor my desire and allow myself the freedom to take on the role of CEO and lady-boss, it actually allows me to be fully present so I can show up as an even better mom when I am in that role.
Secondly, I get to impact and be impacted by people worldwide. I have clients from abroad and have spoken on a panel of experts for a well-known summit out of London! No way could I make the impact and leave the legacy I’m leaving if I had chosen a brick-and-mortar practice in my hometown.
What is the most challenging part of being a web-based businesswoman? Well, it’s sorta lonely! If you’re web-based, I absolutely encourage you to join a mastermind, get involved in your community, or plan trips often.
The truth is, as glamorous as it seems to be able to work from anywhere, humans need human interaction. There have definitely been times I’ve felt a hole inside from lack of physical face-to-face interaction. Most people around you probably don’t do anything remotely like you do. Most people likely don’t even fully understand what you do and may even act as though you don’t have a real job. To seek out and surround yourself with other entrepreneurs and businesswomen who will lift you up, cheer on your ventures, and support your growth, is key.
Tell us more about masterminds. Right now I am in a 1:1 mentorship, as well as two larger communities that act somewhat like a “mastermind.” In 2018, I plan to join one mastermind in addition to what I’m already doing. The relationships made in these types of communities are irreplaceable. Not only have I made lifelong friends who have similar goals and aspirations as myself, which is critical to your personal success, but I’ve made connections and have been given opportunities I could never imagine possible without these groups. When you belong to a mastermind and invest in a mentor, you get guidance, feedback, and accountability. Everyone is there to lift each other up and help each other rise to our best selves. As hard as it is to believe, even though many of us have very similar businesses, we truly want each other to succeed and support each other in all that we do! Hiring a mentor and joining masterminds has been my single wisest business investment hands down.
What do you love about Facebook Live? Facebook Live is an incredible tool to connect with my audience. I try to go live once a week. Ideally, this time should be on the same day and time each week so your audience knows ahead of time when to show up and it creates consistency. Facebook Live is the most authentic way to connect with your tribe… answer their questions in real-time, speak to the common things people ask you about, and give them what feels like personal 1:1 time with you. It’s also a great tool to use to assess your audience and ask them what they want from you!
Someone once told me, “If you truly want to succeed in business, you have to know what your audience wants, not what they need.” This is just so true. If your audience keeps asking for something, DO THAT! Test out those waters. Track how it works focusing on that particular thing. Even if you don’t straight up ask your audience what they want from you, a good indication is to look at which Facebook Live posts get the most views, engagement, and shares. The best performing Live’s and posts are typically where you should go all in and rock it!
Any favorite books? They don’t have to be business based. Does Harry Potter count? 😉 Before starting my business I truthfully hardly ever read. I mean, aside from the Harry Potter series back in the day! I WISH I was a big reader, and growing up I envied one of my sisters (18 months younger than me) because she always made a point to constantly be lost in a book. Now that I’m a business owner and entrepreneur, I know how important it is to make time to read, and I enjoy it! I’m really liking self-improvement books right now. My latest read was Brendon Burchard’s High Performance Habits, which was fantastic. His mom, “Momma B” we call her, is a part of a conference I attend annually and of course, had nothing but great things to say about Brendon and his new book, so I had to pick it up! Even though self-help type books tend to repeat similar themes at times, I enjoy every single one as a boost of re-motivation and inspiration!
How do you maintain your health? Self-love! I allow myself to indulge in self-care, whether that be a warm Epsom Salt bath, a trip to the spa, or a PJ movie night! I believe wholeheartedly that without great health, absolutely everything else suffers. So, I invest in myself! I spend a little extra at the grocery getting organic superfoods to boost my body. I avoid processed foods for the most part. I get a stool exam, nutrient panel, and food intolerance test annually to check on my body and adjust as needed. If one day I am just totally not feeling it, and everything in me is screaming to stay in my coziest clothes and just chill, I check-in with myself and maybe take that day off to reset my body and mind.
What are some of your proudest accomplishments? Giving birth to my son! I was scared out of my mind and honestly thought I was going to die…. no one warned me how hard it can be! Begin a natural health consultant, I was so confident I’d “do it naturally” and baby would just pop out when that due date rolled around. UM, NO. I was in labor for 27 hours. I ended up with an emergency C-section because baby was declining quickly, and I spiked a really high fever. It was so so scary and I swore our little guy would be an only child because I couldn’t possibly go through that again. Well, here we are just 10 short months later talking about giving our sweet boy a little brother or sister. 😉
What helps you increase your productivity the most? Closing other loops is the key to my productivity. As a mompreneur, I wear many hats. If the house isn’t cleaned, there’s a disorganized tornado in a closet, I haven’t been to the grocery, or I have a pile of returns to do, I won’t get much accomplished even if I put those things to the back burner and spend a day at the desk. My mind is just so unsettled if I don’t take the time to first do my other tasks that are swirling around in my head of “to-dos.” If I am organized, my home is clean, and my random “to-do’s” are crossed off, I am on fire in business!
What are some risks you have taken that resulted in positive outcomes? Creating this business was a huge risk that I would do over again in a heartbeat. This business has not only impacted the lives of my clients, their loved ones, and their families, but also my own family. We are creating the life of our dreams and putting our health and happiness at the forefront.
It was scary and financially very unstable at first. I took a major leap of faith investing in a business and health mentor even before I knew what I really wanted to do.
Before this, I had an extremely secure, sought-after, great paying position working for the top hospital in my city. But, I knew myself and I knew what my ultimate goals were. Those goals didn’t align with working at that “safe” job, so I knew I had to make a change. I didn’t know anyone who has ever done anything like me, I had no idea what to do or how I would make any money, and had just gotten married, bought my first home, gotten pregnant and had my first child all within that same year as starting my own business. Wowza! I wouldn’t trade this journey of growth for anything.
Business-wise, where do you see yourself in ten years? Ohh! Hmm… I’m literally smiling cheek to cheek right now as I’m thinking about this answer! 10 years from now… I see myself in a larger home, because we have added 2 or 3 more bundles of joy to our family. I see myself hand-in-hand with my husband, proud of the life we have built together. He has left his current corporate job and is pursuing his passions. We travel often, and spend weekends at our lake home soaking in the sunshine, eating good food with friends and family, and boating the day away! My business has grown significantly, and I now have the most amazing group of go-getter women working together on my team. We meet for a retreat every year for a fun time and shared memories. Most everything in my day is delegated, aside from me just needing to be me and show up for events, speaking opportunities, partnerships, and vlogs. I have an amazing organic supplement product, too! One of my FAVORITE parts of my business is the yearly retreat I host for my tribe. I have top keynote speakers at the event, yoga classes, all-inclusive nourishing food and drink, spa treatments, and more! The ultimate health and wellness retreat. 🙂
What is the #1 piece of advice would you give to someone who’s aspiring to run a web-based business and be a Wild Web Woman? Go for it, sister. Listen to your heart. I believe with every single tiny thing in my body that we were meant to live a life of beauty and bliss, whatever that looks like to you. You WILL live the life you were designed and destined to live if you so choose. Think of your “why.” “WHY” do you want to run this business? What will that do for you, for your family, for your life? If your “why” is there, you will far surpass your goals and aspirations, and I cannot wait to watch you do it!
Thank you, Maggie! You are such a Wild Web Woman! We loved getting to know you!
