For the woman entrepreneur, mother and partner (for some of you all three), time management is one of the most defining attributes of success.

Creating systems is a must to promote a healthy work life balance. This includes creating space to act brilliantly between input and reaction.

Post editor-in-chief at the Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington was working eighteen hour stretches which resulted in her collapsing at her desk. Our bodies don’t function under exhaustion. She began a movement with her book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.

For the woman entrepreneur, you need to self manage to thrive…personally and professionally.

Spending hours planning pilates classes, or yoga retreats could be amazingly beneficial, but can’t always happen with families or hard deadlines approaching.

Turn to what is in your control.

A small place to start thriving is with 10,000 steps a day. It won’t solve all your problems in a week, but you will create the space to think or even, not think (just hold that for a moment…a free mind….ahhhhhhh).

Here are three reasons why 10,000 steps a day will make you healthier, wealthier and better as a partner, mother, woman, and a leader:

1. Serotonin helps you to cope with the stresses of decision making in everything we do, and all the hats we wear. Walking allows you the space to just be—uninterrupted, alone. It also forces us to notice things we didn’t before. The space to observe the world we live in. Walking = serotonin. Bueno.
2. Another way walking daily can help you is it can be bonding time – with a child, friend or partner. A walk in nature without any distractions from work or other for a specific amount of time a day can be magical for your mind, body and soul. Just a little bit of time where ones you love can have your undivided attention will fuel them and fuel you.
3. The best reward I gained from 10,000 steps was meditating. I would be ridden with anxiety, about aspects of my life that were out of my control…walking helped me keep my brain void of over analyzing and a lot of my problems solved themselves. The answer seemed so obvious after this time spent.

Your business is your brand, identity, your livelihood. We spend a lot of time with ourselves. And don’t get me wrong, you are fabulous, but by getting out in the world,  you also get out of yourself, and sometimes feeling less self-absorbed even just for an hour or so can be peaceful…your team and family might thank you too!

Let your 10,000 steps a day be your lesson in gratitude. Let the brief silence fuel you. A healthy work life balance is important. But for me, 10,000 steps was a manageable start to inner peace in a fast-paced lifestyle.
